Choose a sander around the whole job
Power, abrasives and dust handling belong in the same decision.
Decide what surface you are preparing
Name the material and finish before selecting a sander. New wood, a delicate veneer and an unknown old coating are not equivalent jobs. Do not assume that a general wood-finishing tool is appropriate for every surface. Unknown coatings may need professional assessment before disturbance. For ordinary new-wood projects, begin by considering control, access and compatible abrasive supplies.
Corded can be a practical first choice
If most of your work happens near a suitable outlet, a corded model avoids another battery purchase. A cordless option can be useful when mobility is central to the job, but include battery weight and runtime in the comparison. Neither power source makes poor technique or the wrong abrasive disappear.
Plan the connection before buying
Check pad size, attachment style, dust-hole pattern and the exact vacuum connection. Do not assume two nominal hose sizes will fit together without an adapter. Keep consumable costs visible in the budget. A tool that arrives without the abrasives or connection you need can delay the project despite an attractive initial price.
Demand an honest demonstration
A useful test shows the starting surface, abrasive sequence and finished surface under consistent lighting. A quick reveal with a different board is not a meaningful comparison. The corded sander below is a researched candidate; we have not performed that test. Secure the workpiece and follow the manual’s dust-control and protection guidance. Do not treat a small dust bag as a complete hazard-control system.
